Wisconsin's Surface Water Monitoring Stations

Wisconsin conducts surface water monitoring for a variety of purposes. Over the past 30 or more years, DNR water quality biologists, Self-Help Lake Program volunteers, federal and state partners and consultants have established over 20,000 monitoring sites at which data has been gathered for a broad array of purposes.

This monitoring stations dataset, which includes the location and descriptive data for these monitoring sites, was developed using monitoring station descriptors collected for historic and current STORET reporting, baseline monitoring, Self-Help Lake Volunteer, Aquatic Invasive Species monitoring and other programs. These stations are maintained through the Surface Water Integrated Monitoring System (SWIMS). To search for a station or to request a new station, go to: http://dnr.wi.gov/org/water/fhp/storet/storetintro.asp.

The dataset you are viewing was developed in 2005 using latitude and longitude coordinates and/or narrative descriptions linked to field and laboratory results, which were then matched with the state’s 1:24,000 scale hydrography datalayer derived from 7.5 minute USGS topographic quadrangle maps.

Fields in this dataset are listed below. Note that only stations indicated as “Active-Useable” should be used for generating lab slips or for submitting data for new monitoring work. The accuracy of the delineations will improve overtime with the use of new technologies and tools.

For more information regarding the State’s Water Quality Monitoring Program, see selections under ‘Water Resources Data” on the left-hand bar on the support page for this Surface Water Data Viewer.

For more information about the state’s 1 to 24,000 scale hydrography dataset, see the state’s GIS resources website about Hydrography Dataset.
